About the games

The Nordic Capital School Games Started in 1948 in Stockholm. Teacher Holger Westman introduced the idea to the politicians and participated in the very first games. The three cities took turns in arranging the games the following years. Head leaders during the first few years were the Mayors in Stockholm, Copenhagen and Oslo.

In 1952 Helsinki decided to participate for the first time. Two years later, in 1954, Helsinki arranged the games for the first time.

IN SEPTEMBER 2005 A DELEGATION OF NORDIC HEAD LEADERS VISITED THE CITY OF REYKJAVIK, IN ORDER TO INVITE THEM TO PARTICIPATE IN THE GAMES.

In 2006 Reykjavik sent its first group to Helsinki and then Reykjavik arranged their first games in 2011. Since then, all five cities fully participate in the Nordic Capitals' School Games but this year Sweden will not be participating.

In 2020 and 2021 the games were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

  • This years host is Reykjavik, Iceland. The event is organised by the Reykjavik Sports Union on behalf of Reykjavik City.
  • In 2025 the event will take place in Copenhagen, Denmark.
